"Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true" - written by E.Y. Harburg preformed by Dorothy wizard of oz
The song somewhere over the rainbow, has a deep and strong connection to Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream" speech, he talked about a better future where all is created equal and where dreams came true.In the song "somewhere over the rainbow" I chose "...and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true", this part of the song has a connection with the word "dream".
In Martin Luther King Jr's famous I have a dream speech he was basically saying in the future things will change blacks and whites will be able to eat in the same restaurant we will no longer be integrated but we will all be looked at as equals. Even though it took years after the speech before things started to change his dream still came true.
When Martin Luther King gave his I have a dream speech in August 1963 it was a time when people of all races were separated and put in two categories you were either colored or not. So for him to speak of a better place where we were no longer separated was very surprising to hear and probably unbelievable at that time.
When Dorothy sang this song back in 1939 she was talking about herself being in a better place where dreams come true and that if you have a dream you should go out and get it. I think somewhere over the rainbow can mean whatever you want it to mean, whatever you think is a better place where you are free, no worries everything is perfect, that is your rainbow. I personally think my rainbow is heaven there are no worries there everything is perfect everyone is happy and it’s just a good place to be, and thats what I want interpreted in my art piece.
In my art piece I want people to think about what there “rainbow” is because it’s more than just lyrics to a song it really means something. I drew a picture of Martin Luther King in heaven as an angel he is looking down on earth seeing his dream coming true. There is a city where people of all races are getting along and are no longer separated which is exactly what he wanted it to be.
This whole project really taught me to really think about lyrics to a song, some songs have strong meanings that could help you in everyday life. You would never have thought of to look at Martin Luther King and a song from Wizard of Oz to have a connection in some kind of way until you actually look at the two together.
